New two-way lane bridge replaces ageing Diana Bridge, enhancing connectivity in Samtse

Samtse district now has a new two-way lane bridge over the Diana River, replacing the old one, which was a suspension bailey bridge. The Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and the Indian Ambassador to Bhutan inaugurated the structure which is the longest bridge in the country today. It is expected to ensure improved connectivity and safer passage for residents and travellers.

After almost two decades, the old Kuenphen Bridge, popularly known as Diana Bridge, is finally replaced. Over time, the old bridge had begun to show signs of wear and tear, with its load capacity falling to four metric tonnes.

With only one lane and minimal load capacity, heavy vehicles were forced to detour around the Diana River, posing substantial risks, especially during the monsoon.

“Without a strong bridge, we used to face a lot of challenges in the past. We had to cross the Diana River and it was very challenging at times,” said Nar Bdr Tamang, a truck driver.

“During monsoon and heavy rainfall, we cannot cross the river. Our vehicles used to get stuck in the river. And there were also cases of vehicles being washed away by the river,” said Tula Ram Rai, also a truck driver.

The inauguration of the new bridge, however, signifies the end of these challenges.

With a load capacity of 70 metric tonnes, this bridge will not only allow heavy vehicles to cross the river effortlessly but also accommodate two-way traffic, reducing travel time and congestion.

The minister for infrastructure and transport, speaking at the inauguration of the new bridge commended the individuals behind the project, calling it a historic achievement. He said that the bridge was designed and constructed by the Bhutanese symbolising a proud moment for the nation.

Rigsar Construction, the contractor completed the construction of the new bridge ahead of schedule, even amidst the constraints imposed by COVID-19 and its associated restrictions.

The 280-metre-long bridge is expected to benefit about 10 gewogs of the district. The Government of India provided over Nu 220 M for the project.
