Bhutan and Thailand sign two MoUs in academics and tourism

During the prime minister’s official visit to Thailand, Bhutan and Thailand signed two memoranda of understanding (MOUs) in the fields of academics and tourism. The prime ministers of both countries attended the signing.

The first MOU aims to develop cooperative activities in education and research in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy.

It will also facilitate the exchange of medical doctors and nurses between Thailand’s Department of Medical Services and the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan.

The Ambassador of Bhutan to Thailand, Kinzang Dorji, and Dr Amporn Benjaponpitak, Director General of Thailand’s Department of Medical Services, signed the MOU.

“This will help promote economic exchange and cooperation in medical education… As Thailand is Bhutan’s development partner, we will extend our support in knowledge sharing in areas such as healthcare, agriculture and technology,” said Srettha Thavisin, Prime Minister of Thailand.

The second MoU, focused on cooperation in the field of tourism, was signed between Bhutan’s Department of Tourism, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, and the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA).

This agreement aims to explore and implement activities to promote tourism between Thailand and Bhutan under the theme ‘Two Kingdoms, One Destination’.

Ambassador Kinzang Dorji signed on behalf of the Department of Tourism, while the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Governor, Thapanee Kiatphaibool, and Director General of DASTA Athikun Kongmee were the other signatories.

“I hope through this MOU, the number of Thai tourists visiting Bhutan will increase. The MoU on health will facilitate the exchange and transfer of knowledge between our two countries,” said Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister.

Bhutan and Thailand established diplomatic ties in 1989, and this year marks the 35th anniversary of the bilateral relations.
