Thimphu District Court

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has forwarded the child molestation case involving a school Vice Principal to the Thimphu District Court last week.

The 39-year-old Vice Principal of a charity school in Thimphu faces charges of child molestation and criminal attempt to rape a child above 12 years of age.

According to OAG, the accused began molesting girl students since the beginning of the last academic year. But the case came to the limelight only in March this year after one of the girls, who the accused attempted to rape in his office after school hours, visited hospital.

The doctor who examined her sensed the girl was traumatised by something. Upon questioning, the girl opened up to the doctor and shared about how the Vice Principal has been molesting her and friends.

He is believed to have molested a total of nine girls, aged 12 to 14, at the school.

The school administration, after being alerted by the hospital, launched an internal investigation early last month.

Meanwhile, a grandfather of one of the victims reported the matter to the police.

If convicted, the accused could face a prison term of three to five years each for nine counts of molestation and five to nine years for criminal attempt to rape a child above 12 years of age.

The OAG says the accused was sentenced to five years in prison by the Trashigang District Court in 2004 for a rape of a child above 12 years of age.

He served two years of the sentence and was released in 2017 after he paid thrim thue for the remaining three prison term.
